Taking the initiative on race: why America's dialogue is a discourse of discontents

Article Abstract:

American national dialogue on issues of racial reconciliation can best be described as a 'discourse of discontent.' Several issues need to be addressed first before beginning to bridge the gap brought about by issues on race. One of these issues is the clear definition of the conceptual framework used in examining minority relations. Another issue is the integration of the socio-economic legacy of the US racial divide with the historical experiences of Native Americans and Africans in the present context of an increasingly complex, multicultural society.

What's race got to do with it?

Article Abstract:

William Julius Wilson initiated the analysis of race/class interaction but failed to provide a relational class analysis to explain the process by which the white middle and upper classes influence racial outcomes. In 'The Declining Significance of Race: Blacks and Changing American Institutions,' Wilson analyses the way in which social classes determine the lives of the African Americans. He argues that while racial stratification has decreased significantly in the labor market, it will continue to play a significant role outside the labor market.

'The Dispossessed: America's Underclasses from the Civil War to the Present.' (by Jacqueline Jones)

Article Abstract:

Jacqueline Jones' 'The Dispossessed: America's Underclasses from the Civil War to the Present' suggests economic and political reasons for the creation and sustenance of underprivileged groups in American history, regardless of race, color, culture and religion. The apparently anti-social behavior of the underclasses was a result of unemployment, their domination by aristocrats and forced migration.
