The dialogue on violence

Article Abstract:

The report of the Panel on the Understanding and Control of Violent Behavior, 'Understanding and Preventing Violence,' proposes social policy and research initiatives to address issues of violence. Sociological studies devoid of psychological and biogenetic insights will fail to present a comprehensive picture. The report focuses on instrumental violence and program assessment, but considers violence in a very confined context that overlooks collective violence.

Following the action with violence research

Article Abstract:

'Understanding and Preventing Violence,' a report by the National Research Council's Panel on the Understanding and Control of Violent Behavior, offers insights into the reason for the failure of behavioral scientists to resolve the issue of violence in the US. It proposes several research initiatives on the subject, but it does not reveal why public action is helpful and fails to propose appropriate funding for efforts of this magnitude.

Administrative criminology

Article Abstract:

The report of the Panel on the Understanding and Control of Violent Behavior, 'Understanding and Preventing Violence,' is founded on principles of social and scientific obligations. Its assumptions about the governmental and crime experts' role in crime control are flawed because of the institutional nexus involved. Parameters of academic criminology must be used in evaluating the work of administrative criminology.
