The end of mass communication?

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the terminology of communications scholars over the concept of mass communication, which some refer to as media communication, due to changes in technology over the last two decades of the 20th-century. The authors address the possible future of mass communication studies in the new media environment, whether it is a phenomenon or just a fleeting idea, and how the change in terminology implies a shift in scholarly focus.

Shifting paradigms: decentering the discourse of mass communication research

This article examines the history and evolution of mass communication research as a scholastic subject. Alternative visions of mass communication research are offered to encompass changing political and ideological structures and a new social awareness concerning the nature and practice of communication and media.
