Turkey: from etatism to a more liberal economy

Article Abstract:

The 1931-1949 period marked the Etatism era of Turkish economic history. Etatism is an economic strategy wherein the state actively intervened in industrial activity to promote the nation's welfare and the development of the state. It had dominated the Turkish economy until the end of the 1970s. At the beginning of the 1980s, Turkey shifted from Etatism to an outward-oriented free market policy. The country adopted the Stabilization and Structural Adjustment Program on Jan 24, 1980 and exercised liberal economic policies to make the free-market economy stronger.

These nations tried to pursue morally correct policies to indirectly coerce Cambodia to initiate political reform. However, these policies only helped exacerbate and prolong the oppression of the Cambodian people.
