Article Abstract:

The latest models of handheld global positioning systems demonstrate the advances made in this marine technology. These handhelds are equipped with audible alarms, battery gauge, simulator mode, adjustable screen lighting, longer battery life and other unique features that sailors will find helpful in navigation. Eleven new-generation GPS handhelds are evaluated.

Twelve folding or feathering boat engine propellers are tested for thrust, speed and drag to compare performance to fixed-blade propellers. The best propellers for sailing are the feathering propellers, which have minimal drag when not used, but are powerful enough to push a large boat.
