Spectacle and fandom: Media discourse in two soccer events in Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

The role of the news media in the production of media sports spectacle through representation of soccer fandom and articulation of the meanings of sports events is examined and the visits of two European soccer teams to Hong Kong is analyzed. The result states that public discourse embraced the commercialization of sports, and the media helped to transform the preseason "friendlies" into hugely successful spectacles.

Paul Willis, cultural commodities, and collective sport fandom

Article Abstract:

An attempt is made to explore how Paul Willis's theoretical perspective on cultural commodities might be applied to sport and the communal relations formed through its collective consumption as popular culture. It aims to show that sport provides an interesting example of a defetishized commodity with deep communal significance and attachment.
