Team sports and the theory of deliberate practice

Article Abstract:

Studies of soccer and field hockey players who compete internationally indicate, as with musicians, rates of practice correlate with quality of performance. Athletes and musicians also enter a critical period once they have practiced their skill for ten years. At this level, both practice increases and performance reaches an international level. The correlation between practice and performance is true for individual and team performance, and the theory of deliberate practice should include teams.

Decision-making skills and deliberate practice in elite association football referees

Article Abstract:

The first of two studies to show sport expertise as a function of role provides evidence that there are role-specific skills within one domain or sport when referees showed to be better than players in a video-based decision making task. In the second, training activities that could be influential in the development of skills in sports officials when examined showed that referees specialize early and as they develop, they engage in greater volumes and types of training.
