Absolute and relative frequencies of automation accidents at different kinds of equipment and for different occupational groups

Article Abstract:

Automation accidents account for about 9% of reported accidents in the workplace, according to a study of 21 factories over a 2-year period. Accidents took place at 4% of the pieces of automated equipment over a year period, with 3% of machine operators reporting accidents. Operators of 'joining' equipment incur relatively more accidents than other machine operators, although the subsequent period of sick leave is shorter than with other automation accidents.

Safety climate

Article Abstract:

A report on safety climate factors in two clerical and service organizations in Australia shows that both the organizations lack stable safety climate factors. Employees' responses to questionnaires reveal that organizations have different perceptions of occupational health and safety. The current safety climate factors of an organization must be taken into consideration in order to design effective occupational health and safety programs.

Occupational violent crime: research on an emerging issue

Article Abstract:

Occupational violent crime is the intentional battery, rape, or homicide during the course of employment. Data from the Occupational Safety and Health's National Traumatic Occupational Fatalities project for 198085 was used for the study. Statistical analysis showed an increase in incidenceduring the 5-year period necessitating immediate attention and corresponding response from both government and industrial sectors.
