Changes in speed and speed adaptation following increase in national maximum speed limit

Article Abstract:

Speed adaptation is a sensory response felt by people when they undergo a change in relative motion. A study on speed adaptation conducted in California reveals that recorded travel speeds were faster in 1988 than in 1985 inspite of the absence of speed limit changes on these roads. In addition, results indicate that drivers who have adjusted to high vehicular speed drive faster than the unadapted drivers when leaving the freeway and entering a connecting roadway. These findings lead to the conclusion that permitting higher speeds on some highways may result in higher speeds on connecting roads and other distant roads as well.

Adolescent driving: characteristics associated with single-vehicle and injury crashes

Article Abstract:

Peer based programs can prevent crashes involving young females, while family and parental involvement can reduce incidents of crashes involving young men. Young male drivers would run a low risk of single-vehicle crashes if they have lower propensity to marijuana or alcohol abuse. Living with parents lowers the chances of injury crashes in males. The chances of single-vehicle crashes are less for young females with less propensity toward smoking. Young females, who never used alcohol and have friends not involved with marijuana or alcohol, face lesser injury crashes.
