Exports build on fast ferry credentials

Article Abstract:

Western Australia has considerably expanded its fast-ferry building industry with incentives given by the government. The region has been known for its wave-piercing catamarans and conventional catamaran passenger ferries which are exported to the UK, China and other countries. Western Australian ferry exports have reached about $113 million in 1991-92. The federal government gives assistance in the form of bounties wherein shipbuilders committed to invest in the industry and those providing significant employment are provided subsidies.
