Howard Wells

Article Abstract:

Howard Wells is chief executive of the United Kingdom Sports Council (UKSC) and is used to working under public scrutiny and political presure, with a proven track record for forming national organistions. The UKSC has been formed to improve international standards, promote the UK ovreseas and encourage more events in the UK.The council also has responsibility for staff training, doping control and the British Academy of Sport. Wells was formerly chief executive of the Hong Kong Sports Institute and was instrumental in encouraging government to build a new National Stadium and Sports House.

Rodney Walker

Article Abstract:

Chair of the English Sports Council, Rodney Walker aims to make the Council as transparent and honest as possible. Walker hopes to rebuild confidence in the council, and his four objectives include: strengthening the organisation's focus; reducing bureaucracy and staff levels; collaboration with other agencies; and demonstration that the Council is back in business. Details of Walker's role within the Council are given.

An ILAM seminar has examined the leisure implications of single-tier local authorities. Speakers covered sport and recreation, environmental and cultural matters and tourism. Local authority association representatives provided a broader view. All emphasised the need for local authorities to take leisure seriously. A government department for leisure could provide unity.
