Mergers & maturity

Article Abstract:

There has been a considerable amount of takeover and merger activity in some sectors of the UK leisure industry. Takeover activity has had a particularly negative impact on the family entertainment centre/ten-pin bowl and the nightclub sectors. There are many rumours about possible mergers in the food and beverage sector, while the bingo sector has been quiet for some time as a result of recent buyouts and mergers. Merger and takeover activity creates additional challenges for leisure property developers, as it is difficult to persuade operators to agree to leases.

The budget boom continues

Article Abstract:

New build hotels became a thin of the past in the recession during the early 90s, and new build even now is selective. However the budget hotel has continued to develop, with Forte, Travelodge or Whitbread Travel Inns typical models. Traditional budget hotel operators have been expanding to more than 100 beds, and moving to edge of city locations. Breweries have become active in the sector, which means budget hotels can be combined with family pub restaurants.
