Morocco

Article Abstract:

There were an estimated 3.1 million international tourist arrivals in Morocco in 1997, up by more than 15% from 1996. Non-resident Moroccans accounted for around one-third of the total. The country's tourism sector suffered badly in the early 1990s, but the government has been successful with a new tourism promotion campaign stressing the country's cultural and geographical diversity. There were 10 million overnight stays in Morocco's classified hotels in 1996, of which foreign guests accounted for 78%. Overnight stays by French tourists rose by 18.5% to 2.4 million.

Ethiopia

Article Abstract:

Ethiopia offers several attractions as an international tourist destination, including a good climate, good proximity to Europe, an ancient Christian and Muslim cultural heritage and attractive scenery. However, many tourist facilities are considered inadequate and further capital investment is required. The tourist industry is likely to maintain comparatively rapid growth during 1997-2002, primarily in the Northern Historic Route area. Tourist arrivals would increase further if visa procedures were liberalized.
