Piece de resistance

Article Abstract:

Resistance training has become increasingly popular since the 1990s after it was officially recognised as playing an important role in maintaining a healthy fitness level. Equipment is sold both without and with electronics, air, hydraulics and cams, and it can be difficult selecting the most appropriate equipment. Most resistance training equipment comprises weight stack machines which accommodate the body's strength curve via simple levers and pulleys. The different types of equipment are described.

Heavy metal

Article Abstract:

Physical fitness centres are moving towards using extremely sophisticated equipment, but this does not mean that loose weights no longer have a role to play in a fitness programme. They are very versatile, and play a key function in specialised fitness work. They should be made available to all clients, and should not be kept separately from other equipment. It is important to ensure that all clients are properly trained in the use of loose weights.

Weighty matters

Article Abstract:

Loose weights are often seen as not having a place in a fitness package, but all leisure centres should in fact offer both fixed range machines and loose weights if they wish to provide the best service for their clients. Many health clubs and local authority leisure centres are now finding that pursuing a mixed equipment policy has been successful, encouraging clients to use loose weights as a more developed form of training.
