Museum visits fall by 4 percent

Article Abstract:

Visits to UK museums declined by 4% from 1997-1998, according to a report by the Museums and Galleries Commission, entitled 'Museum Focus 2'. Half of the population never go to museums. Over 90% of museums have their conservation work by outsiders and a lot of museums do not have specialists among their employees. From 1997-1998 there was a 20% rise in volunteers working at museums versus a 2.5% decrease in full-timers.

Museums losing visitors

Article Abstract:

There has been a 40% decline in visitor numbers to UK museums. People are taking short breaks abroad, attracted by the strong pound sterling and low cost flights. They are spending their leisure time going to gymnasiums or visiting bars and restaurants as a form of relaxation. Young people and ethnic males are not keen on the arts. Museums are trying to change their image with events such as Museums and Galleries Week.
