Article Abstract:

The role of slot machines on leisure sites is changing. Leisure site operators, including local authorities, are acknowledging the entertainment value of these machines. Manufacturers are striving to develop more challenging formats which appeal to the different clientele using dissimilar leisure sites, and to the values of different site operators. Manufacturers also believe that the environment in which the amusement machines are set is important, a social context being more applicable than, for example, a sports-only environment.

CD and cassette: past their prime?

Article Abstract:

The new sound reproduction technology, digital compact cassettes (DCC) and mini discs (MD,) are mostly incompatible with existing stereo formats. They may replace tape cassettes, with CDs remaining popular. DCC and MD offer track access, but recordings are similar quality to expensive cassette decks. Music videos with hi-fi soundtracks are popular. Laser video disc players are being developed. A portable MD and a DCC player were compared with the other formats for convenience, track access time, portability and sound quality.
