A simple wetland habitat classification for boreal forest waterfowl

Article Abstract:

Researchers believe that a simple structural classification system using data which can be easily obtained from black-and-white aerial photographs is adequate for predicting waterfowl use of wetland habitats. Site visits are not necessary. They developed a simple wetland structure classification system, which builds on existing systems, and successfully applied it to the study of habitats of boreal forest waterfowl in the Claybelt region of Ontario. The study revealed that some wetland types were used more than anticipated and are, therefore, relevant to waterfowl management in this area.

Factors affecting predation on artificial nests in marshes

Article Abstract:

Researchers constructed artificial passerine and waterfowl nests in eight marshes to study predation rates over time, and relate this to other factors likely to affect predation. These factors included water depth, nest visibility, adjacent upland area type and predator type. The results revealed that water depth has a major impact on predation, with decreasing water depth allowing increased accessibility for terrestrial predators.
