A transient liquid-like phase in the displacement cascades of zircon, hafnon and thorite

Article Abstract:

The irradiation-induced decomposition of zircon and hafnon is investigated, and evidence for the formation of a liquid-like state in displacement cascades is found. The results explain the frequent occurrence of ZrO(sub2) in natural amorphous zircon and it is concluded that zircon-based nuclear waste forms must be maintained within strict temperature limits so that irradiation-induced amorphization of phase decomposition is avoided.
