Adipocytes as regulators of energy balance and glucose homeostasis

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted about adipocytes to provide knowledge about their biology and understand the pathophysiological basis of obesity and metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. The findings suggest that adipocytes play an important role in calorie storage, which makes it suitable for regulations of energy balance and also serves as crucial integrator of glucose homeostasis.

Reactive oxygen species have a causal role in multiple forms of insulin resistance

Article Abstract:

A genomic analysis of two cellular models of insulin resistance, one induced by treatment with the cytokine tumour-necrosis factor-alpha and the other with the glucocorticoid dexamethasone is reported. Gene expression analysis suggests that reactive oxygen species levels are increased in both models, and this was confirmed through measures of cellular redox state.

HIF-independent regulation of VEGF and angiogenesis by the transcriptional coactivator PGC-1[alpha]

Article Abstract:

The article discusses significance of the transcriptional coactivator PGC-1[alpha] (peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor-[gamma] coactivator-1[alpha]) in regulation of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) without employing the hypoxia inducible factor (HIF). PGC-1[alpha] is also found to be essential for angiogenesis regulation.
