An epithelial serine protease activates the amiloride-sensitive sodium channel

Article Abstract:

The activity of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is important in the regulation of blood pressure and sodium balance. An analysis of the effects of the serine protease trypsin on ENaC activity in a Xenopus kidney epithelial cell line (A6) shows that exposure of the apical membrane to aprotinin results in a reduction in transepithelial sodium transport, which can be restored by exposure to trypsin. The functional properties of the new channel-activating protease 1, which is a member of the serine-protease family and which is involved in the regulation of ENaC activity, are presented.

An electroneutral sodium/bicarbonate cotransporter NBCn1 and associated sodium channel

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to prove the existence of the electroneutral Na+/HCO3 cotransporter, which is vital in regulating pHi in myocardial cells and in smooth-muscle cells from rat mesenteric artery and guinea-pig ureter. NBCn1 may play a role in the background Na+ conductance in these tissues.
