BMP-4-responsive regulation of dorsal-ventral patterning by the homeobox protein Mix.1

Article Abstract:

A paired class homeobox protein, Mix.1, mediates the bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP-4) signalling pathway to dorsal-ventral patterning in Xenopus embryos. Mix.1 messenger RNA causes extensive blood formation in the embryo and alters dorsal mesoderm into a ventral one. Mix.1 expression is activated by BMP-4. Mix.1 forms heterodimers with the dorsalizing gene, siamois, which encodes a homeodomain protein. This protein is structurally similar to Mix.1. Mix.1 obstructs the duplicated axis activated by ectopic siamois expression.
