Bcl-2 promotes regeneration of severed axons in mammalian CNS

Article Abstract:

The neurons of the central nervous system of mammals usually lose their regenerative ability after a certain point in their development. Unlike retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) of embryos, RGCs from older animals cannot grow axons into tectum of any age. The role of the proto-oncogene bcl-2 in this developmental shift is examined. It is found to stimulate the growth and regenerate retinal axons, although this effect does not appear to be indirectly related to the proto-oncogene's anti-apoptotic activity.

Prions prevent neuronal cell-line death

Article Abstract:

Prion diseases are neurodegenerative conditions distinguished by an accumulation of a host-encoded glycoprotein, PrPSc. The normal cellular isoform, PrPC has an unknown physiological function although it may be involved in survival of Purkinje cells. Serum removal from the cell cultures was found to cause apoptosis in Prnp-1- cells but not in Prnp+/+ wild type cells.
