Blair's failure

Article Abstract:

The Department for Education and Skills is criticized for a lack of responsiveness and excessive control, and therefore scientists and their organizations need to put pressure on Tony Blair's administration as it enters a third term in office. The rise in the grant-funding science budget is not accompanied by appropriate infrastructural and teaching support from higher-education funding councils.

London's disastrous drug trial has effects for serious side research

Article Abstract:

A drug trial in London adversely affected healthy volunteers when they received intravenous injections of TGN1412, an antibody made by a biotechnology firm in Germany where the drug is developed to fight autoimmune diseases and leukaemia. The trial was the first test of the drug in humans and it was immediately suspended by the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.
