Caterpillar kinematics

Article Abstract:

Research shows that caterpillars use a reflex coiling action to escape at speed from danger. The Pleurotya ruralis mother-of-pearl moth recoils against the end of its body that is anchored to the ground to roll backwards. The caterpillar temporarily suspends the need for stability and overcomes its restrictive segmented body. Experiments demonstrate how the caterpillar uses reverse locomotion as a withdrawal response. The same segmental muscles are used in the recoil-and-roll process as for standard locomotion.

Getting seated

Article Abstract:

Sports venues are expected to compete with television if they are to continue attracting spectators. Facilities are expected to be as comfortable, convenient and safe as watching sport at home. It is suggested that eventually small personal receivers with screens and earphones will be built into the seat frame, offering replays, information about players and previous games.
