Connexin 26 mutations in hereditary non-syndromic sensorineural deafness

Article Abstract:

Research based on a pedigree containing cases of autosomal dominant deafness has allowed a non-syndromic sensorineural autosomal deafness susceptibility gene to be identified for the first time. Researchers found a mutation in the gene encoding the gap-junction protein connexin 26 (Cx26) which segregates with severe deafness in the family. The research indicates a role for gap junctions in the recycling of potassium ions back to the endolymph of the cochlear duct after stimulation of the sensory hair cells.

Fendi for themselves: Silvia Venturini bags a winner for the Italian fashion clan

Article Abstract:

Silvia Venturini may be the rebel of her Fendi family, but she is its current star with the international popularity of her Baguette handbag. The bag, which sells at $5,000, is made by artisans from the Manifattura Lisio in Florence. It earned its name from a nonchalant comment during a product introduction press conference that proffered the observation Venturini was carrying the bag like French bread, thus the name Baguette.
