Efficacy of northern goshawk broadcast surveys in Washington state

Article Abstract:

Nesting northern goshawk broadcast calls at 40 nest stands were tested to examine the possibility that survey methods or regional habitat characteristics affected detection rates. Some 109 detections, of which 68% were vocalizations, were logged during 439 station visits and 210 trials. On at least one occasion, northern goshawks at 37 of the 40 occupied territories were detected, including four occupied sites that failed. Successful nests showed greater detectability. The sole factor correlated with detection rates was distance of the surveyor to the nest, as gleaned from logistic regression modeling data.

A very hard market

Article Abstract:

Global media companies are facing political obstacles in creating their niche in the Asian market due to the restricted media policies of the Asian governments. Global satellite television, such as Dow Jones Corporation, the BBC and STAR TV have invested in Asian media establishments and developed regional services. While China, Singapore and Malaysia have resisted the entry of foreign media organizations, Vietnam and Hong Kong have become well-developed media centers for foreign media giants. The policies favour Asian media companies and discourage the cultural invasion from the skies.

Eye to eye with a cobra

Article Abstract:

Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski has published a new book on Africa, "The Shadow of the Sun," which is the sixth volume in his chronicles of the Third World. Kapuscinski, who has reported on approximately 30 revolutions around the world, feels an affinity towards developing countries because of his own experiences of growing up in poverty in war-torn Poland.
