An orange a day keeps the scurvy away

Article Abstract:

Scurvy is a nutritional deficiency disease that began in the 15th century and afflicted those deprived of fresh food, particularly the sailors who circumnavigated the world for long periods of time. James Lind, a Scottish naval surgeon, was first to discover in 1747 that daily doses of lemons and oranges cured the ailment of sailors. Later discoveries in 1907 by Axel Holst and Albert Szent-Gyorgyi included the attribution of the disease to lack of the essential dietary component and the identification of vitamin C which was later called ascorbic acid.

Feedbacks from the sea floor

Article Abstract:

Sedimentary rocks have over 10(super7) gigatonnes of organic carbon of marine origin, and scientists believe this is evidence that oxygen was added to the ocean and the atmosphere in varying degrees over time. Hartnett and colleagues have presented evidence that the period of exposure by organic materials to dissolved oxygen after being incorporated into sediments, is a crucial control.
