Hard graft

Article Abstract:

Fiona Wood, a head surgeon of a burn unit at the Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia has developed a technique called 'spray-on skin' that involves spraying patient's wounds with their own skin cells, which works much faster than conventional methods. Her success in use of this technique on October 2002 when victims of the Bali terrorist bomb were flown to her unit has named her as Australian of the Year 2005 by the media.

All in the mind of a mouse

Article Abstract:

Studies are conducted on genetically engineered mice to carry a specific gene mutation known or thought to cause human psychiatric diseases like schizophrenia and autism. The basic similarities of behavior between mice and humans allow mice to be used for such studies, even though humans are more complex than mice.
