Floater males gain reproductive success through extrapair fertilizations in the stitchbird

Article Abstract:

Research shows that extrapair copulations occur in many animal populations and are part of mixed reproductive behaviors where paired males copulate with other, already paired, females. A new study of stitchbird chicks from an isolated breeding population in New Zealand uses minisatellite DNA profiling to apportion parentage. Results show that extrapair copulation accounted for 35% of all nestling and that 80% of nests contained extrapair young.

Testosterone and social and reproductive behaviour in Aphelocoma jays

Article Abstract:

In both western scrub-jays and Mexican jays testosterone levels increase rapidly in March. Elevated testosterone levels were seen for around three weeks in the monogamous western scrub-jay, continuing into May in Mexican jays. This supports the hypothesis that testosterone is elevated when male-male competition is frequence and mating opportunities rely on the outcome of that competition.
