Hopes for pan-European network

Article Abstract:

The Amsterdam based forum of network organizations, the Reseaux Associes pour la Recherche Europeenne (RARE), is installing a Delivery of Advanced Network Technology for Europe Ltd (DANTE), to provide a comprehensive pan-European network to help researchers in the academic, government and community fields and to develop high speed links with the United States. The network will function from Cambridge, England and will be paid by countries who access its services through their national network service.

$3m deal launches major hunt for drug leads in Brazil

Article Abstract:

Glaxo Wellcome, a pharmaceutical multinational and Extracta, a small Brazilian biotechnology company, have entered into a $3.2 million contract to screen plant, fungus and bacterial compounds found in the Amazonian and Atlantic rainforests. Brazil's new patent law and the richness of the country's biodiversity has made it an appropriate investment according to Glaxo manager for business development in Latin America, Padraic Ward.

Calls by the US for an increase in its expected carbon emissions have lead to the collapse of global warming talks at The Hague, Brussels, where up to 180 countries are represented by 4,000 delegates.
