How global warming caused cooling: dynamic effects of thermohaline circulation

Article Abstract:

It is clear that thermohaline circulation (THC) has a direct effect on the world's climate. Research indicates that the current pattern of THC is not static, with increased freshwater influx reducing sea surface salinity and surface waters thus becoming less dense. This causes extensive disruption to the formation of North Atlantic Deep Water. It appears that the function of THC will play a substantial role in the outcome of the very significant climate change that the Earth is likely to undergo over the next 500 years. If THC does experience a reduced ability to circulate, the ocean's capacity to absorb atmospheric CO2 will be restricted, with potentially life threatening repercussions.
