Less choosy or different preference? Impact of hypoxia on hermit crab shell assessment and selection

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the effect of environmentally induced stress, or hypoxia, on the shell characteristics or shell selection of the hermit crab, Pagurus bernhardus. Hypoxic hermit crabs were observed to enter shells that were substantially lighter than those chosen by hermit crabs under normal oxygen. Results indicate that the shift in shell preference may be caused by the concern for energy minimization rather than protection.

The shell selection behavior of two closely related hermit crabs

Article Abstract:

An experiment exploring the shell selection behavior of two inter-tidal hermit crabs, Pagarus samuelis and Pagarus hirsutiusculus, was conducted. P. samuelis preferred Tegula funebralis shells while P. hirsutiusculus preferred Nucella canaliculata shlls. Results indicate that shell selection is based on visual and chemical smell stimuli. Tracking behavior was exhibited by P. samuelis.

Motivational change during shell fights in the hermit crab Pagurus bernhardus

Article Abstract:

Research into motivational change during hermit crab Pagurus bernhardus shell fights is presented. Evaluating the duration of a startle response indicates that motivation for fighting continues to change during an escalated phase of the fight. Motivation is influenced by the potential gain in resource value.
