Mechanisms of angiogenesis

Article Abstract:

The mechanisms involving the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) were reexamined in vitro using murine embryo. Sprouting angiogenesis is regulated by an endothelial-specific growth and chemotactic factor, VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) while non-sprouting angiogenesis is induced by proliferation of endothelial cells. Both types require the presence of endothelial receptor tyrosine kinase (TIE-2). Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-b) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF-B) regulates proper maturation and modification.

Vega is a rapidly rotating star

Article Abstract:

A study reporting optical interferometric observations which show that Vega has the asymmetric brightness distribution of the bright, slightly offset polar axis of a star rotating at 93 per cent of its breakup speed is presented. In addition to explaining the unusual brightness and line shape peculiarities, the result leads to the prediction of an excess of near-infrared emission compared to the visible, in agreement with observations.
