Visa wrangle brings crisis in science jobs

Article Abstract:

Immigrant scientific research staff cannot work in the US because they lack work visas. The annual H-1B category visa quota was used up by May 1998 and no further visas have been awarded. University employers are in desperate need of the non-US staff, according to the Association of American University. The quota, currently standing at 65,000, may be increased to 95,000 in 1999.

US foreign policy under fire over strategy on science

Article Abstract:

The National Academy of Science has been asked by the US State Department for advice on how it can integrate science with foreign policy. The State Department concedes it may have neglected science, technology and health areas, one reason being the department's belt-tightening through the mid-1990s.
