Multiple episodes of aridity in southern Africa since the last interglacial period

Article Abstract:

Scientists have discovered evidence of arid episodes in aeolian sediments of the Mega Kalahari sand sea in Africa using optical dating techniques. Episodic aeolian activity is more prevalent on the southwestern desert core than the northeastern desert margin. Multiple arid periods occurred after the last interglacial period. Dune-building activity is identified at various times leading up to modern times. The research indicates that northeast-southwest summer rainfall gradient differences correspond to aridity differences.

Groundwater maintains dune landscape

Article Abstract:

An evidence of a major groundwater system that underpins the factors leading to the landscape, Badain Jaran desert in western Inner Mongolia in China, is presented. The groundwater samples collected from deep wells and spring in the desert for their deltaD and delta(super 18)O composition and its system represented a major resource for the region is analyzed.
