Patent system gets vote of support from gene workers

Article Abstract:

Genome scientists, industrialists and patent lawyers, participating in an international conference conducted by the French Academy of Sciences in Paris, extended their support to the patent system as a means to commercialize the results human genome projects. According to the participants, gene patenting does not pose specific problems, and granting patents based on their novelty, non-obviousness and utility should resolve problems typical of gene patenting.

Dolly research plans further experiments after challenges

Article Abstract:

Ian Wilmut, the researcher who reported the cloning of Dolly the lamb from the udder cell of an adult ewe, is to clarify the lamb's origin in further experiments, after challenges about Dolly's authenticity. Researchers have criticized the poor characterization of the donor cells and argued that the origins of the lamb should have been clarified by a genetic fingerprinting comparison with the donor ewe.
