Potential collapse of North Sea cod stocks

Article Abstract:

The populations of North Sea cod have declined significantly due to unsustainable harvesting or overfishing which depletes the number of mature fishes that are capable of spawning. Analysis of North Sea cod populations based on the stock-recruitment curve shows the detrimental effects of cod harvesting beyond the maximum sustainable yield. Furthermore, overfishing also reduced the chances of juvenile Atlantic cod to reach maturity and reproduce to rejuvenate the cod stock.

Distant gene flow in tropical trees

Article Abstract:

The use of simple sequence repeats (SSR) for determining gene flow and mating parameters in 28 adult trees of the species Pithecellobium elegans is demonstrated. The results reveal a substantial degree of pollen competition in outcrossing species. A paternal genotyope for all mating events was identified and it was shown that gene flow from known fathers averaged 142 meters.

Population of origin of Atlantic cod

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the development of microsatellite genetic markers which can be used to trace Atlantic cod to their population of origin and therefore assist in identifying poachers and policing regulations.
