Researchers contest reports of tree death

Article Abstract:

German and other European forestry researchers and conservationists strongly criticize the European Forest Institute's report. The report claims that European trees are free from the danger of death and the tree growth has actually increased. The researchers question the validity of the studies, and maintain that several parameters relevant to tree health have been ignored. Increased tree growth is an indicator of weakness and intrinsic damage rather than the health of trees. European forests, particularly in central Europe, are in great danger of damage and death.

Germany avoids large projects in favour of economic payoffs

Article Abstract:

Germany's new research minister, Matthias Wissmann, has announced new research strategies which will focus on environmental research, including alternative sources to nuclear energy, as well as strengthening of modern technologies like biotechnology. Wissmann's plan avoids large-scale research projects and seeks to strenghten dialogue between industry and academic institutions. In line with the change inresearch direction, plans are being formulated to set up 'innovation colleges' in eastern Germany.
