Role of NF-kappa-B in p53-mediated programmed cell death

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to gain an insight into the function of the tumour suppressor gene p53. Induction of p53 prompts an activation of NF-kappa-B that correlates with the ability of p53 to induce apoptosis.

Role for the p53 homologue p73 in E2F-1-induced apoptosis

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the activation of a p73 pathway to kill cells through the involvement of transcription factor E2F-1 in the absence of p53.

Regulation of p53 stability by Mdm2

Article Abstract:

An interaction between the p53 tumor-suppressor protein and the Mdm2 oncoprotein is needed to ensure normal cell growth and development. In this process, Mdm2 controls the apoptic functions and cell-cycle arrest in p53. In addition, the enhanced proteasome-dependent degradation created by the interaction results to a reduction in the number of p53 proteins. P53 concentrations in normal cells are thereby reduced.
