Simulating the motion of gas bubbles in a liquid

Article Abstract:

The volume-of-fluid (VOF) technique plays a valuable role in the study of the motion of gas bubbles in a liquid. This model resolves the transient motion of the gas and liquid phases using the Navier-Stokes equations. It also accounts for the topology changes of the gas-liquid interface brought about by the relative motion between the dispersed gas bubble and the liquid enclosing it. Two-dimensional VOF simulations give velocity values for rising bubbles that are about half those measured experimentally in cylindrical columns.

Exploding electron bubbles

Article Abstract:

The application of negative pressure can cause the explosion of electron bubbles that are used to study the superfluidity of liquid helium. The use of focused ultrasound cyclically increases and decreases the pressure on the electron bubble with respect to ambient pressure. The pressure minima can become negative for large amplitudes and if it goes lower than -2 atmospheres the bubble explodes. This occurs due to the absence of an equilibrium bubble radius for these pressures.

Stress-induced recrystallization of a protein crystal by electron irradiation

Article Abstract:

The reordering of radiation-damaged protein crystals is reported, under conditions of transport initiated by stress. The distorted crystal recrystallized after a certain density of radiation-induced defects are accumulated. Stress is caused by the defects at temperatures low enough to suppress diffusive mass transport, indicating that the defect induced reordering may be a general phenomenon.
