Article Abstract:

An emerging research points to the link between poor sleep patterns and appetite, and scientists are trying to figure out exactly how these circuits interconnect, to find out if cultivating proper sleep patterns in obese people can control obesity. An overview of the studies undertaken by different research groups in order to establish the interconnection between poor sleep and obesity is presented.

Lure of lie detectors spook ethicists

US companies are planning to profit from a lie-detection technology that uses brain scanners to search brains of people facing criminal charges for give-away patterns of deception. Critics claim that the science underlying the companies' technique is shaky and that the premature commercialization of the method raises ethical concerns about its eventual use in interrogation.

The advantages and limitations of metabolomics, which is the study of raw materials and products of the body's biochemical reactions, are discussed. Researchers are hopeful that a combination of genomics, proteomics and metabolomics will help in predicting an individual's disease risk.
