Sonic hedgehog function in chondrichthyan fins and the evolution of appendage patterning

Article Abstract:

A study demonstrates that chondrichthyans share patterns of appendage Sonic hedgehog (Shh) expression, Shh appendage-specific regulatory DNA and Shh function with ray finned fish and tetrapods. The regulatory changes in Shh signalling might provide an important potential source for generating morphological diversity in addition to the evolution of downstream Shh-responsive gene networks.

An autopodial-like pattern of Hox expression in the fins of a basal actinopterygian fish

Article Abstract:

The expression and function of genes implicated in the origin of the autopod in a basal actinopterygian, Polyodon spathula, are described. The analysis has shown that the development of the autopod is primitive to tetrapods and the origin of digits entailed the redeployment of ancient patterns of gene activity.

Lost and found

Article Abstract:

The way genetic variation arises within populations and evolves to make species anatomically and behaviorally distinct is described. The genomes of sticklebacks are compared with and without pelvic structures and the variation in the pelvic fins is explained.
