Spectroscopic identification of a galaxy at a probable redshift of z = 6.68

Article Abstract:

The use of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph has made it possible to identify a galaxy at a probable redshift of 6.68. This is the most distant object ever detected. This galaxy is relatively bright at wavelengths longer than Lyman-alpha. The redshift determined from the emission line was in excellent agreement with the redshift determined from the redshift likelihood function. It appears that very high-redshift galaxies are luminous at rest-frame ultraviolet wavelengths.
