Stars at the quantum limit

Article Abstract:

Quantum effects control the essential nature of the matter that composes white dwarf stars. These are extremely dense Earth-sized stars that result from the gravitational collapse of stars less than three times the Sun's mass. Gilles Chabrier, N.W. Ashcroft and H.E. DeWitt found that quantum effects cause white dwarf matter to melt at a lower temperature in 10% of the most massive white dwarf stars. This limit imposes severe constraints on the thermodynamics of white dwarf matter.

Science as a cultural construct

Article Abstract:

Sociologists who describe science as being a worthless representation of modern thinking are mistaken. They have overlooked the fact that scientists provide a record of factual evidence and proven research findings using sound experimental techniques. This view is illustrated with a criticism of A. Pickering's 'Constructing Quarks: A Sociological History of Science.'
