The No Surprises policy is essential to attract private dollars for the protection of biodiversity

Article Abstract:

The No Surprises policy of the Endangered Species Act promotes biodiversity since it could provide the private funds needed to finance ecosystem planning. Private capital can now be attracted in a variety of ways, including mitigation banks, conservation banks, and tradable habitat credits. The policy also provides certainty and predictability to private landowners who will be expected to put no undue limit to the use of their lands as long as an understanding is made that no more land nor money will be further required from them.

Estimating and questioning economic values for endangered species: an application and discussion

Article Abstract:

A contingent valuation survey that measures the economic benefits derived from the implementation of species protection regulations such as the Endangered Species Act was conducted. The technique of evaluating economic values for threatened and endangered species was applied to the peregrine falcon and shortnose sturgeon in Maine. Results provide evidence of the existence of such economic values despite the fact that the method presents potential limitations.
