The RNAi revolution

Article Abstract:

A study of the RNA molecule which regulates the expression of genes leading to the discovery of RNA interference (RNAi) which silences the gene expression by double stranded RNA molecules is presented. The importance of RNAi as an experimental tool in biology research to learn gene function and as a widespread natural phenomenon of genome defence in many organisms is also discussed.

Control of tillering in rice

Article Abstract:

The isolation and characterization of MONOCULM 1 (MOC1), a gene that is important in the control of rice tillering are presented. This gene is responsible for the functions to initiate axillary buds and to promote their outgrowth.

SOS response promotes horizontal dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes

Article Abstract:

The process by which SetR, an SXT encoded repressor, represses the expression of activators of SXT transfer is described. Findings reveal that the SOS response to DNA damage alleviates this repression.
