The earliest Acheulean from Konso-Gardula

Article Abstract:

Human fossils and other remains are abundant in the Konso-Gardula archaeological area in the southern part of the Main Ethiopian Rift, discovered in 1991 by the Palaeoanthropological Inventory of Ethiopia. The sediments correspond to Acheulean culture, and have been isotope dated to approximately 1.3 to 1.9 million years ago. Homo erectus was contemporary with these people, and both probably dispersed into Eurasia before the global ice movements which occurred between 0.9 and 0.7 million years ago.

The first skull of Australopithecus boisei

Article Abstract:

The discovery of new Australopithecus boisei specimens in Konso, Ethiopia, has extended the known geographical range of A. boisei. It is now clear that A. boisei coexisted with Homo erectus in a mainly dry grassland environment. It seems likely that there was considerable morphological polymorphism and/or polytypism among all early hominids. This would make it unnecessary to divide taxa at species level, paying considerable attention to small morphological differences.

Dating of the Herto hominin fossils

Article Abstract:

The stratigraphic and geochronological data of the Bouri Formation in the Middle Awash region of Ethiopia, is analyzed. The study indicates that although the estimated maximum age of the Herto hominin fossils is valid, the minimum age is doubtful.
