US stem-cell pioneers buy 'Dolly' cloning company

Article Abstract:

Roslin Bio-Med, the Scottish company that cloned Dolly the sheep, has been purchased by Geron Corp of Menlo Park, CA, for 2.1 million shares of Geron stock, worth around $26 million. The merged concern, Geron Bio-Med, will undertake research designed to establish how the cytoplasm of an egg 'reprogrammes' an adult cell nucleus and to give the same ability to a store of generic, enucleated cells that are not eggs. Geron has already cloned vital parts of human telomerase.

NIH to abandon young investigator grants

Article Abstract:

New investigator grants at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) are to be abolished. However, the organization has pledged to retain its total funding for new NIH investigator grants until 2,002. First Independent Research Support and Transition awards, R29's, will cease to exist in 1998. Those participating on current R29 schemes will continue to receive funding as arranged. The R29 scheme was impractical, according to NIH representatives.

US panel to back longer cloning ban, ducks thornier questions

Article Abstract:

Th National Bioethics Advisory Commission is recommending the continued ban on government financing for cloning research. This move was spurred by Pres Bill Clinton's reaction to the success of the Roslin Institute in cloning a sheep from an adult ewe. The commission is evaluating options such as legislative and voluntary ban to discourage the private sector from engaging in cloning research.
