Matthews International Capital Management L.L.C. in San Francisco is focusing on Japan and is buying shares of financial-services companies in anticipation of higher industry profit as consumer lending and investment climb. This mutual fund expects rising profit in its financial-services firms as the $195 million Matthews Japan Fund rose 27.5 percent in 2003.
