Open-system nonequilibrium steady state: Statistical thermodynamics, fluctuations, and chemical oscillations

Article Abstract:

Nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamic based on stochastic kinetics is introduced, mainly through a series of examples like single-molecule enzyme kinetics, nonlinear chemical oscillation, molecular motor, and biochemical switch and specificity amplification. The examples show that isothermal open chemical systems can be subjected to rigorous statistical thermodynamic and kinetic studies.

Continuous self-avoiding walk with application to the description of polymer chains

Article Abstract:

A study developed the continuous self-avoiding walk (CSAW) methodology for investigating temperature dependent geometric and thermodynamic properties of finite polymer chains without imposing a lattice. CSAW is found to lead to the new concept of the free energy theta temperature, [T.sub.thetaF], as the temperature at which the free energy is proportional to chain length N.
